For most families, family vacation takes place during the Summer and it’s that time of the year again.
But before you pack up the car and load everyone in, and even before you stop to get gas and snacks, I want to you teach you all a fun game to play that will provide entertainment and fun while you’re going from one destination to another..
My family calls this game, The ABC Game. My dad taught this to my sister and I when we were little girls and we’ve been playing it ever since. I’m not even sure if it’s a real game or not. I just know it’s something that was always fun for us and we’ve since taught it to our children.
The objective of the game is to see who can get from A-Z first by calling out the alphabet, in order, that are found in words along the road. These words can come from signs, other cars, license plates, buildings, etc. The key to this game is to be very observant, to be fast, and of course to have fun.
There’s only three major rules; (1) One letter per word/per player–I can say A in Applebee’s but I can’t say A in Applebee’s and B in Applebee’s at the same time (2) You cannot repeat the same letter and word once it’s been said–If I say A in Applebee’s, no one else can say A in Applebee’s. However, someone could say P in Applebee’s once someone reaches the letter P (3) You cannot use any words within your own car.
How to play:
This game works best with 2 or more people and is perfect for both children and adults. The more people you have the harder the challenge will be. Each player starts at the same time and the game is played simultaneously.
EX: You’re on the interstate going from one State to another and you decide to play The ABC Game. Each player starts off with the letter A. Lets say I see a sign for Applebee’s. I’ll yell out, “A in Applebee’s.” Then I’m on letter B. I’ll yell, “B in Bridge” (perhaps there was a sign that says, Washington Bridge). I’ll keep going until I get to Z. Meanwhile other players in the car are also playing. They’re yelling their letters at the same time as I am. I’m now on letter C but maybe my dad is on B; my sister could be ahead of me on D and my mom is stuck on J.
The first person to reach the letter Z first, wins! You can stop the game there and start over or the other players can keep going.
-It can get a little loud in the car, especially if you’re anything like my family.
-The letters J and Q are always the hardest.
